He grew up in North Sydney and attended Neutral Bay Public School and Mosman High School completing the Intermediate Certificate. During this time he became interested in films and puchased his first 8mm movie camera at aged 13 from money he earned selling newspapers after school. When he left school his first job was a copy boy at The Sydney Morning Herald and Sun Newspapers and Woman's Day Magazine in Sydney. He moved on to Shipping Newspapers in North Sydney who offered him an apprenticeship which he completed in 1970. The apprenticeship required him to attend Sydney Technical College to complete a four year course in Graphic Arts. After this time he worked for a number of printing and packaging firms whilst he started producing his own films financed by his weekly earnings. The films put him in touch with many actors from the Ensemble Theatre and it was not long after that he started his film career at APA Film Studios in Sydney during the mid 1970s. |
