Dr. Deming was born in Wyoming in 1900. He gained his doctorate from Yale in 1927, and worked at the Bell Laboratories in the 1930’s where he developed his ideas for TQM which were largely ignored in America. He invented the idea of sampling (often used today in market research), during his work for the US Census in the late 1930’s. His work with the census led him to be invited by General Douglas Macarthur to help rebuild post-war Japan. During some lectures to local Japanese industry leaders in the northern spring of 1950, Dr Deming explained his methods of TQM. Unlike the Americans back in the 30’s, the locals took it seriously and the rest is history.
